立冬 rittou
冬が立つと書いて立冬。恵那山麓では初霜と恵那山の初雪を観測しています。木枯らしが吹くと広葉樹が舞い散り、落ち葉を掃く人々の姿が見られます。山々が徐々に色を変え、冬の門から風が吹き込むように感じます。
赤い橋からの雲海
雲海を見たことがありますか。雲海とは霧が広い範囲に発生し、それが山の斜面や盆地にたまって、高いところから見下ろしたときに雲の海のように見える現象です。恵那山麓では秋と冬の間の早朝に気象条件が整い、雲海が発生する場所がいくつかあります。
苗木城は、木曽川沿いの山の上という、雲海を見るのに適した地形的な条件を備えていることから、「天空の城」とも呼ばれます。冬が近づくこの時期の夜明け前、雲海を見るために苗木城が見える橋へ向かいました。橋の名前は城山大橋。龍の像が橋の入口を守っています。この赤い橋は、1984年に木曽川の難所を越えるために開通したそうです。
そして橋を歩いて渡る途中に雲海が見えてきました。川面から橋の高さまで、一面の白い霧が満ちていて世界を上下に分断する巨大で、厚く、そして白く広がっています。幽玄とはこのことなのでしょうか。すこしずつ姿を変える雲海は苗木城の舞台装置のようでした。
時を江戸時代に戻します。今から150年ほど前までは、この川を渡るには渡し船しかありませんでした。橋も電気もない時代。周囲の視界は雲海によって閉ざされ、城はまるで天空に浮かぶ孤島そのもの。外敵からの防御が固いという山城の堅牢さを、感じたことでしょう。
太陽が昇るころにはゆっくりと熱を浴びて、光や、霧や、風が姿を変えます。かくれていた苗木城の巨岩の石垣が、威厳をもって姿を現しました。太陽は分厚い雲をつきぬけています。ほんの少しの時間で、まるで物語が進むように空は青く澄んでいきました。もしかしたら150年先の未来の物語には、この赤い橋の存在が記されているのかもしれません。
First Frost
At the foot of Mount Ena, we’ve observed the first frost and the first snowfall on the mountain. When the cold wind blows, broadleaf trees scatter their leaves, revealing people sweeping fallen leaves.
Sea of Clouds from the Red Bridge
Have you ever seen a sea of clouds? A sea of clouds occurs when fog forms over a wide area, accumulating on mountain slopes or in basins. Viewed from high ground, it resembles an ocean of clouds. In the foothills of Mount Ena, several locations meet the necessary meteorological conditions for sea of clouds to form during the early mornings between autumn and winter.
Naegi Castle, situated atop a mountain along the Kiso River, possesses the ideal topographical conditions for viewing sea of clouds. It is thus also called the “Castle in the Sky.” As winter approached, I headed to the bridge overlooking Naegi Castle before dawn to see the sea of clouds. The bridge is called Shiroyama Ohashi. A dragon statue guards its entrance.
From the river surface up to the bridge’s height, a vast expanse of white mist filled the air, thick and white, dividing the world into upper and lower realms. Was this what they meant by “mysterious beauty”? The ever-shifting sea of clouds resembled a stage set for Naegi Castle.
Until about 150 years ago, the only way to cross this river was by ferry. It was an era without bridges or electricity. The surrounding view was blocked by the sea of clouds, making the castle seem like an isolated island floating in the sky. One could surely feel the solidity of a mountain castle, renowned for its strong defenses against external enemies.

私たちは恵那山のふもとでフリーペーパーを発行している任意団体です。本当の意味で“誰一人取り残されない”のは季節の移り変わりではないでしょうか。また美しい自然から、地域の強みや魅力を教えられているのは、私たちだとも感じています。 心を豊かにするこの地域のひとときを二十四節氣とともに発信。そしてこの地のスタートアップから、インタビューや寄稿を通したコンテンツは、恵那山の頂きより「ヤッホー！」と叫ぶように、多くの人々に届いたらいいなと思っています。
We are a voluntary organization that publishes free papers at the foot of Mt. Ena. Isn't it the change of seasons that truly means that no one is left behind? I also feel that we are the ones who are taught the strengths and charms of the region by the beautiful nature. We will transmit a moment of this region that enriches the mind with 24 seasons. And I hope that the content through interviews and contributions from startups in this area will reach as many people as possible like shouting "Yo-ho!" from the top of Mt. Ena.
