大寒 daikann
大寒を迎え、恵那山麓もいよいよ一年で最も深い寒さに包まれました。この時期、凍てつく大地の下を流れる水は「寒の水」と呼ばれます。
恵那おろしといわれる冷気が水の濁りを払い、その純度を最も高めてくれます。古くから味噌や酒、そして寒天作りといった恵那の営みに欠かせません。コップ一杯から、五感で味わってみてください。
しめ縄から「藁馬」へ
七草粥をいただき、鏡開きをして小正月を迎えました。皆さんはお正月をどう過ごされましたか。私たちは、お正月に神様を迎えた「しめ縄」を丁寧にほどき、その藁を使って小さな馬を編んでいます。きっかけは「自分の手で今年の干支を作ってみたい」という、ささやかな好奇心でした。けれど、藁を綯う指先は、思いがけずこの地の古い記憶へと繋がっていきます。
かつて恵那山麓の家々でも、この極寒の時期に「藁馬」を編む姿がありました。それは、山を越えて春を連れてくる神様をお迎えに行くための、特別な「乗り物」。大切な家族である馬の無病息災を願ったといいます。
日本には「予祝」という言葉があります。まだ雪が残る厳しい冬の最中に、「最高の春が来た！今年も豊作だ！」と未来の喜びを先取りしてお祝いしてしまう。いわば、幸せの「先行予約」です。藁を編む指先から、もう田植えの季節を想い、柔らかな春の風を感じる。それは、なんともゆたかな時間となりました。出来上がった馬たちが、それぞれに個性豊かな表情をしているのも、また愛らしいものです。
中山道を通じて信州の文化とも混ざり合い、古くから馬を家族のように愛してきた恵那山麓。私の暮らす集落でも、かつては馬が山を越え、隣の町まで荷物を運んでいたと聞きました。何気ない好奇心が、いつの間にか時を越え、先人たちの祈りと重なり合ったのだと思いました。この美しい手習いを、私たちはこれからも大切に続けていきたいと考えています。
Daikan (Great Cold)
With the arrival of Daikan (Great Cold), the foot of Mt. Ena is finally enveloped in the deepest cold of the year. At this time of year, the water flowing beneath the frozen earth is called “kan no mizu” (water of cold). The bitter cold clears the water’s turbidity, enhancing its purity. This water has long been considered a “winter treasure,” essential for Ena’s daily activities, such as making miso, sake, and agar. Start by savoring it with all five senses, starting with a glass.
From Shimenawa to “Straw Horses”
Weaving small horses out of straw. The Ena foothills, intertwined with Shinshu culture through the Nakasendo Road, have long cherished horses like family. I heard that in the village where I live, horses once crossed the mountains to carry loads to neighboring towns.
The finished horses, each with their own unique expressions, are truly endearing. In Japan, there’s a word for this: “yoshuku” (celebration in anticipation). Even in the middle of a harsh winter when snow still remains, people celebrate in anticipation of future joys, saying, “The best spring has come! This year’s harvest will be bountiful!” It’s like an “advance reservation” of happiness. It seems that the straw horse also has this meaning. We hope to continue to cherish this beautiful practice.

私たちは恵那山のふもとでフリーペーパーを発行している任意団体です。本当の意味で“誰一人取り残されない”のは季節の移り変わりではないでしょうか。また美しい自然から、地域の強みや魅力を教えられているのは、私たちだとも感じています。 心を豊かにするこの地域のひとときを二十四節氣とともに発信。そしてこの地のスタートアップから、インタビューや寄稿を通したコンテンツは、恵那山の頂きより「ヤッホー！」と叫ぶように、多くの人々に届いたらいいなと思っています。
We are a voluntary organization that publishes free papers at the foot of Mt. Ena. Isn't it the change of seasons that truly means that no one is left behind? I also feel that we are the ones who are taught the strengths and charms of the region by the beautiful nature. We will transmit a moment of this region that enriches the mind with 24 seasons. And I hope that the content through interviews and contributions from startups in this area will reach as many people as possible like shouting "Yo-ho!" from the top of Mt. Ena.
