春分
太陽は真東から昇り、真西へと沈みます。昼と夜、暑さと寒さがちょうど真ん中で調和するこの時期は、先祖を供養し、自らを見つめ直す期間とされてきました。
日本の祝日法において、春分の日は「自然をたたえ、生物をいつくしむ」日と定義されています。他の国にも春分という節目はありますが、「すべての生きとし生けるものへの愛」を国家として掲げていることに、この国の精神的な豊かさを感じずにはいられません。
ももはじめてわらう
七十二候には「桃始笑」という美しい言葉があります。日本人は古来、ふっくらと膨らんだ蕾がパッと開く様子を「笑顔」に例えてきました。古語において「笑う」とは、まさに「花の蕾がひらく」ことそのものを指します。「梅は香る」「桜は舞い、零（こぼ）れる」という表現も、その花の命の在り方を捉えた品格のある言葉です。
恵那市串原の木根（きね）、三宅明さんのご自宅「きね しだれ桃園」を訪ねました。現在、約四千本ものしだれ桃が咲き誇るこの里山には、三十年を超える時の積み重ねがあります。
始まりは、源泉の掘削から七年の歳月をかけて完成させた温泉「ささゆりの湯」の誕生でした。未来を信じて湧き出たこの賑わいを、決して一過性のもので終わらせない。その情熱から、三宅さんら有志は最初の三百本の苗木を植えました。さらに、そこで咲いた花から種を採り、自らの手で苗を育てて命を紡ぎ出したのです。終わりのない「まちづくり」というキャンバスに描き出したのが、このしだれ桃の里でした。
昨年、しだれ桃を見に訪れた人は七千人に上りました。春分が過ぎる三月下旬から四月にかけて、赤、白、桃色の花が次々と笑いだします。土に根ざした美しさは、春分の光を浴びてさらに輝きを増すことでしょう。先人が耕し、守り、結んでくれた豊かな土台があるからこそ、私たちはその上で次なる夢を描くことができます。「きね しだれ桃園」の里では、あの日の三百本の物語が、今、四千本の笑顔となって私たちに返ってこようとしています。

Peach Blossoms Begin to Smile
The 72 microseasons include the beautiful phrase “Peach blossoms begin to smile.” Since ancient times, the Japanese have likened the sudden opening of plump buds to a “smile.” In archaic Japanese, “smile” specifically refers to the opening of flower buds. Expressions like “plum blossoms are fragrant” and “cherry blossoms dance and spill” are also dignified words that capture the essence of these flowers’ lives.
We visited the “Kine Weeping Peach Orchard,” the home of Mr. Akira Miyake in Kine, Kushihara, Ena City. Currently, approximately 4,000 weeping peach trees are in full bloom.
Last year, 7,000 people came to see the weeping peach trees. From late March, after the spring equinox, through April, the red, white, and pink blossoms bloom one after another. The beauty rooted in the earth will shine even brighter when bathed in the light of the spring equinox.
