小満
小さく満ちると書いて小満。今年は朝晩が冷え、立夏を過ぎても霜が降りたとも聞きました。それでも心地よく過ごせるほんの少しの季節です。恵那の谷を吹き抜ける風が緑の匂いを運ぶと、ここから一気に畑の野菜も山々の木々も大きくなります。
朴の木
あらゆる命がすくすくと育ち、天地に満ち始めるこの季節。恵那の山々を眺めると、木々が競うように瑞々しい若葉を広げ、森全体が力強い生命力に包まれているのを感じます。
この時期、山でひときわ存在感を放つのが「朴の木（ホオノキ）」です。日本で一番大きな葉を持つと言われるこの木は、恵那山の豊かな水と湿り気のある土壌を好みます。その姿は、恵那山のふもとに水が豊富であることの象徴です。自分の顔がすっぽり隠れるほどの巨大な葉をワサワサと揺らす様子は、まるで森の王者のようではないでしょうか。
実は、この大きな葉。おじいちゃんやおばあちゃんが若かった頃、すでにプラスチックのラップもあったはずですが、あえて葉っぱを選ぶ豊かさがそこにはありました。プラスチックの容器も冷蔵庫も高価だった時代、恵那山麓の人々はこの葉でご飯を包みました。それが、今に伝わる「朴葉寿司」です。朴の葉には強い殺菌作用があり、中身を傷みから守りつつ、数時間置くことで酢飯に爽やかな香りが移ります。初夏の農作業の合間に食べる朴葉寿司は、この地域ならではの特別な郷土料理です。
そして、朴の木の凄さは葉っぱだけではありません。その「幹」もまた、恵那山麓の文化を支えてきました。柔らかくて刃の入りがなめらかなのに、狂い（変形）が少ない。実は、江戸時代のポップカルチャー「浮世絵」の版木にも使われていた素材です。柔らかく彫りやすいこの木がすぐそばの山にあったからこそ、この地域には『子ども版画』という独自の文化が自然と根付いたのではないでしょうか。
この頃の青々とした朴の葉の姿に、私たちの暮らしも心も、静かに満たされていくのを感じます。
Shoman
The characters for “Shoman” mean “small fullness.” When the wind blowing through the Ena Valley carries the scent of greenery, both the vegetables in the fields and the trees on the mountains grow rapidly from this point on.
Magnolia
During this season, the magnolia tree stands out prominently in the mountains. Said to have the largest leaves in Japan, this tree thrives on the abundant water and moist soil of Mount Ena. Its presence symbolizes the region’s plentiful water supply at the foot of the mountain.
A local specialty from the foothills of Mount Ena is “Ho-no-ki Sushi” (Magnolia Leaf Sushi). Magnolia leaves possess strong antibacterial properties, protecting the filling from spoilage while imparting a refreshing aroma to the vinegared rice after a few hours.
Magnolia wood was also used for the printing blocks of “Ukiyo-e,” the pop culture of the Edo period. “Children’s woodblock printing” took root in the region as a unique cultural tradition. As we gaze upon the lush green magnolia leaves of this season, we feel our lives and hearts being quietly filled with a sense of contentment.
