大暑 taisho
「大きく暑い」と書いて“大暑”。一年でもっとも暑い季節が訪れました。太陽も雨も勢いを増し、草はぐんぐん伸びていきます。恵那山麓では、空に湧き上がる入道雲、突然の夕立や雷雨に驚かされることもしばしば。
この地に暮らす私たちは暑さに寄り添う知恵を受け継いできました。日本家屋には暑さを逃す工夫が散りばめられ、すだれや風鈴、夏の建具など、風や音で涼を感じる文化が息づいています。鈴虫の音に涼しさを感じるのも、日本ならではの感性かもしれません。
乗馬体験 ベルのいえ
そんな暑さの中、馬と人はどう日々を乗り越えているのか――その暮らしぶりを知りたくて、恵那市三郷町にある、馬とのふれあいのできる施設「ベルのいえ」のベルと菅野貴子さんを訪ねました。
山里で暮らす馬のベルは、オオバコやイネ科の草が大好き。夏の草刈りの季節になると、集落の人たちが刈った草をベルのもとへ運んでくれるそうです。たくさんの草の中から好みを選んで食べられるこの季節は、ベルにとって嬉しい夏なのだとか。
「馬は暑さに弱くて、汗をたくさんかくんですよ」と貴子さん。岩塩を与えると、ベルはずっと舐めているそうです。暑さと共に生きる身体の知恵を、動物も持っているのだと思いました。
かつて馬は荷を運び、ときには田畑を耕し、人の暮らしを支える存在でした。恵那山麓にも馬頭観音が点在しています。今ではその役割こそ変わりましたが、ベルを通して人が出会い、集まる場所となっています。
乗馬とおやつをあげる体験もさせていただきました。「人参もうないの？もっと欲しい！」というようなベルの表情が、とても可愛らしく印象的。そして大きなベルに乗ると、ぐっと目線が高くなり、不安を感じる私にそっと寄り添うように、ゆっくりと歩いてくれました。
ベルは、馬の中でも穏やかでやさしい性格なんだそうです。「目線の低い子どもや車椅子の方には、そっと近づいてくれる。」と貴子さん。そっと寄り添う気配に、人は自然とほっとして、心がほどけていきます。
Taisho“Great Heat”
Written with the characters for “great” and “heat,” Taisho marks the hottest season of the year. The sun shines ever more intensely, the rains grow heavier, and grasses shoot up with unstoppable energy.
We who live in this land have inherited wisdom for coexisting with the heat. Traditional Japanese houses are filled with techniques to let the heat escape—bamboo blinds (sudare), wind chimes, and summer sliding doors all help create a sense of coolness through breeze and sound. The soothing sound of bell crickets (suzumushi) evoking a sense of coolness is a uniquely Japanese sensibility.
Bell’s House
Wondering how people in the region live through the intense summer heat, I visited Bell’s House (Beru no Ie) in Misato Town, Ena City—a place where locals can interact with horses. There I met Bell the horse and Ms. Takako Sugano.
Bell lives in the peaceful mountain village and especially loves plantain and grasses from the Poaceae family. During the summer mowing season, villagers bring cut grass to Bell. Being able to pick and choose his favorites from a wide variety must be one of the great pleasures of summer for him.
“Horses are sensitive to heat and sweat a lot,” Ms. Sugano explained. When given rock salt, Bell licks it constantly to stay balanced.
In the past, horses played a vital role in daily life—carrying loads, working the fields, and supporting human livelihoods. Even today, horse guardian statues (bato kannon) are scattered across the Ena mountain region as a testament to their importance.
“This summer too, I have things I want to do with Bell. I hope many people will visit during this season when we can truly enjoy summer.” said Takako.
Those words reflected both a creative approach to living with the heat and a heartfelt reverence for the changing seasons.
ゑなの結とは
私たちは恵那山のふもとでフリーペーパーを発行している任意団体です。本当の意味で“誰一人取り残されない”のは季節の移り変わりではないでしょうか。また美しい自然から、地域の強みや魅力を教えられているのは、私たちだとも感じています。 心を豊かにするこの地域のひとときを二十四節氣とともに発信。そしてこの地のスタートアップから、インタビューや寄稿を通したコンテンツは、恵那山の頂きより「ヤッホー！」と叫ぶように、多くの人々に届いたらいいなと思っています。
We are a voluntary organization that publishes free papers at the foot of Mt. Ena. Isn't it the change of seasons that truly means that no one is left behind? I also feel that we are the ones who are taught the strengths and charms of the region by the beautiful nature. We will transmit a moment of this region that enriches the mind with 24 seasons. And I hope that the content through interviews and contributions from startups in this area will reach as many people as possible like shouting "Yo-ho!" from the top of Mt. Ena.
