夏至 geshi
夏至は一年で最も昼の時間が長くなる日。太陽が高く昇り、影は短くなり、まるで大地が光に包まれるような瞬間を感じる頃です。この日は世界各地で夏至祭が開かれ、日本でも伝統的な行事が行われています。
長島町には太陽との深いつながりを感じさせる「鍋山メンヒル」が鎮座しています。夏至の日には、二本の立石の間から日の出見ることができます。古の人々はここで何を願い、どんな思いを馳せていたのでしょうか。
長島町には中山道や西行遺跡、正家廃寺跡、多くの古墳群が点在しています。新しさと古さが混ざり合うこの地は、時の流れを感じさせる趣があります。
恵那山麓の夏秋トマト
日本に入ってきた江戸時代は観賞用だったトマト。恵那山麓はトマトの栽培が盛んな地域です。二月の雨水の頃に種まきをしたトマトは夏至を迎える頃に出荷がはじまりまると聞いて恵那市長島町の水野園芸の水野智仁さんを訪ねました。
水野さんは今年で六年目のトマト農家。もともと蘭などの花を育てていたハウスが何棟も立ち並び、中に入ると美しく整列された苗が並びます。夏から秋にかけて収穫できるトマトを夏秋トマトといいます。
トマトは下の方から熟していき、十八段も実がなるそうです。水野園芸では「麗月（れいげつ）」という大玉トマトの品種の一つを栽培しています。甘みと酸味のバランスが良く、生食にも向いているとのこと。取材の途中で受粉を専門にするマルハナバチが、元気に飛び回っているのに気づきます。マルハナバチを介すると、トマトの受粉がより自然に近い形で行われ、品質の向上や省力化につながると水野さん。
トマトは太陽の光がとても大切で、光を求めて葉が広がります。夏至の頃が一番元気だと聞きました。梅雨に入りましたが植物達はしっかりと太陽を感じ取っているのです。歴史、農業、生き物たちが交差する恵那の地。太陽が長く照らす夏至の日、この地に根付く文化と恵みが、一層輝きを増しています。
Geshi — Summer Solstice
Geshi, or the summer solstice, marks the longest day of the year. The sun climbs high in the sky, shadows grow short, and it feels as if the earth is momentarily wrapped in light.
In Osashima Town stands the Nabeyama Menhir, a sacred monument that evokes a deep connection with the sun. On the day of the summer solstice, the sunrise can be seen perfectly framed between two upright stones.
Osashima is dotted with historical sites, including segments of the Nakasendō trail, Saigyō relics, the ruins of the Shōge temple, and many ancient burial mounds. In this land where the old and new intertwine, one can truly feel the quiet passage of time.
Summer-Autumn Tomatoes at the Foot of Mt. Ena
The foothills of Mt. Ena are known for their vibrant tomato cultivation. I visited Mr. Mizuno of Mizuno Horticulture, located in Osashima Town, Ena City.
This year marks Mr. Mizuno’s sixth year as a tomato farmer. Several greenhouses, originally used for growing orchids and other flowers, now stand in neat rows. Inside, beautifully arranged tomato seedlings line the space.
Tomatoes ripen from the bottom upward and can bear up to 18 tiers of fruit. At Mizuno Horticulture, they grow a large-fruited variety called Reigetsu (“Beautiful Moon”). I noticed bumblebees buzzing vigorously around the greenhouse. Mr. Mizuno explained that their pollination work helps improve fruit quality while also reducing labor.
Tomatoes are highly dependent on sunlight, and their leaves spread wide in search of light. I was told they’re at their healthiest around the time of the summer solstice. Even in the rainy season, the plants are still sensing and responding to the sun’s presence. On this day when the sun shines its longest, the deep-rooted culture and blessings of this land seem to glow all the more brightly.
ゑなの結とは
私たちは恵那山のふもとでフリーペーパーを発行している任意団体です。本当の意味で“誰一人取り残されない”のは季節の移り変わりではないでしょうか。また美しい自然から、地域の強みや魅力を教えられているのは、私たちだとも感じています。 心を豊かにするこの地域のひとときを二十四節氣とともに発信。そしてこの地のスタートアップから、インタビューや寄稿を通したコンテンツは、恵那山の頂きより「ヤッホー！」と叫ぶように、多くの人々に届いたらいいなと思っています。
We are a voluntary organization that publishes free papers at the foot of Mt. Ena. Isn't it the change of seasons that truly means that no one is left behind? I also feel that we are the ones who are taught the strengths and charms of the region by the beautiful nature. We will transmit a moment of this region that enriches the mind with 24 seasons. And I hope that the content through interviews and contributions from startups in this area will reach as many people as possible like shouting "Yo-ho!" from the top of Mt. Ena.
