霜降 soukou
霜降を迎え、季節はいよいよ秋の深みへと。霜が降りる頃といわれ、畑仕事の様子もがらりと変わりました。多くの田んぼでは稲刈りを終え、微かに残る藁の香ばしい匂いが、秋雨の肌寒さに薄れていくのを感じます。
金幣社八王子神社
岐阜県恵那市明智町にある金幣社八王子神社は、まさに地域の信仰の中心地です。こちらには、太陽神である天照大神の八柱の御子神が祀られており、その由緒の深さが伝わってきます。白鷹城の城門を移築したとされる重厚な唐門に刻まれた明知遠山氏の家紋が、場の空気を一変させるように感じました。数百年を超えて受け継がれてきた歴史と厳粛な気配が、今も確かに息づいているように思えます。
秋の例祭では三つの分団にわかれ、それぞれが固有の色をまとい、太鼓と笛の音に合わせてまちを練り歩きます。桃色の宮本組は、春の名残を思わせるような、柔らかな華やぎと、若さと希望を運んでくるようです。山吹色の若一組は、実りの秋、黄金の稲穂の豊穣をたたえ、陽の光を浴びて力強く進みます。藍色の桔梗連は、夜空の静けさを映し出すように、凛とした気配と美しさを漂わせています。
恵那山麓の中でも、地域によってお祭りの形式が大きく異なるのは、その土地の歴史、地理、産業、そして信仰という固有の背景が、祭りに色濃く反映されているからでしょう。このお祭りを支えているのは地域の人々はもちろん、毎夜練習を重ねた学生たち、そして故郷を離れてもこの日のために帰ってくる若者達の活躍ではないでしょうか。彼らが、秋の恵那山麓に多彩な風景を描き出しているように映りました。
忙しい現代社会において、神社が担うべき役割は変化しつつあります。人々の心の安らぎの場であると同時に、この例祭のように過去と未来を結びつけ、地域の人々が集い、絆を深める「コミュニティのまんなか」となっていく―。神社の新しい役割が、地域の活力を生み出すことを願います。
soukou – The Descent of Frost
With the arrival of soukou, the “Frost Descent” in the traditional calendar, the season makes its way into the deep heart of autumn. It is said to be the time when frost begins to fall, and the rhythm of work in the fields shifts noticeably. Most of the rice harvest has already been completed, and the faint, toasty scent of straw lingers in the air—slowly fading beneath the chill of autumn rain.
Kinpeisha Hachioji Shrine
Kinpeisha Hachioji Shrine, located in Akechi Town in Ena City, Gifu Prefecture, stands as a spiritual heart of the region. Enshrined here are the eight divine children of Amaterasu, the sun goddess. The majestic karamon gate, said to have been relocated from the gate of Shirataka Castle, bears the crest of the Akechi Tōyama clan—its intricate carvings still gleaming with dignity. One can feel the solemn presence of history that has been passed down for hundreds of years.
During the autumn festival, the community divides into three troupes, each dressed in its own signature color, parading through the town to the sounds of drums and flutes. The Miyamoto group in soft pink evokes the lingering traces of spring—carrying with it a gentle radiance, youth, and hope. The Wakakazu group in vibrant yamabuki yellow celebrates the bounty of autumn, advancing boldly like golden ears of rice in the sun. The Kikyo troupe in deep indigo moves with quiet grace, reflecting the stillness of the night sky.
In today’s busy society, the role of shrines is evolving. They remain places of spiritual solace, yet, as seen in this festival, they also serve as bridges between past and future—a center of community where people gather, reconnect, and strengthen their bonds. May this renewed role of the shrine continue to breathe life into the region.
