夏至
一年のうちで最も太陽が空に長く留まる季節、夏至。恵那山のふもとには、古代祭祀の痕跡とされる巨石が点在しています。その大きな石と石の隙間から、一年で最も力強い夏至の太陽が昇る光景――そこには、太古の人々が天体に抱いたであろう畏敬の念が息づいています。この地域にとっても夏至は、単なる季節の節目ではなく、大地のエネルギーと太陽の恵みが一番強く交わる特別な時なのです。
夏至の光が紡ぐ、加子母・明治座の記憶
夏至を前に、中津川市加子母に佇む芝居小屋「明治座」を訪ねました。明治27年（1894年）に地元の有志によって建てられたこの総ヒノキ造りの芝居小屋は、電気による近代的な照明がなかった時代から、人々の娯楽の中心であり続けました。その熱気あふれる空間を照らし出していたのは、他でもない「自然の光」です。
夏至を迎えるこの時期、建物の側面に設けられた大きなあかり窓や引き戸からは、一年で最も豊かで力強い太陽の光がたっぷりと注ぎ込みます。高く昇った太陽からの真っ直ぐな光線は、薄暗い劇場の奥深くまで届き、使い込まれた花道や回り舞台の美しい木目をくっきりと浮かび上がらせます。光の筋の中を舞う細かな埃さえも、まるで舞台演出のように黄金色に輝くのです。
現代の私たちは、スイッチ一つで夜を昼に変えることができます。しかし、太陽の軌道とともに劇場内の表情が移ろい、スマホの光では味わえない“本物の光の演出”を体験できる場所です。
この貴重な建物を維持し続けるため、明治座は現在も見学できるように開館しています。長い年月を経て磨かれた客席に身を置くと、この場所を大切に守り、未来へと結んでいこうとする地域の人々の強い意志が、今も確かに受け継がれているのを感じます。
今年の夏至は、少しだけ足を延ばして、明治座の写真を撮ったり歴史を感じたりしてみませんか。大きな窓から射し込む長い一日の光の中に、この地が紡いできた温かな記憶に魅了されるはずです。
The Summer Solstice
The summer solstice is the time of year when the sun remains in the sky the longest. At the foot of Mount Ena, massive stones believed to be remnants of ancient rituals are scattered throughout the landscape. The sight of the summer solstice sun—the most powerful of the year—rising through the gaps between these massive stones is imbued with the sense of awe that ancient people must have felt toward the celestial bodies.
Memories of Kashimo’s Meiji-za, Woven by the Light of the Summer Solstice
Ahead of the summer solstice, I visited the “Meiji-za,” a theater nestled in Kashimo, Nakatsugawa City. Built in 1894 by local volunteers, this theater, constructed entirely of cypress wood, has remained a central hub of entertainment for the community.
At this time of year, as we approach the summer solstice, the richest and most powerful sunlight of the year pours in through the large skylights and sliding doors on the side of the building.
The direct rays from the high sun reach deep into the dimly lit theater, clearly highlighting the beautiful wood grain of the well-worn hanamichi (stage runway) and revolving stage. Even the fine dust dancing within the beams of light glows golden, as if part of the stage production.
