芒種
「芒種」を迎える前に、中津川市加子母を訪ねました。加子母は一気に生命の色彩を濃くします。田には早苗が揺れ、山の恵みで育つ飛騨牛、瑞々しい加子母トマト、そして天を突く東濃桧が美しいと感じます。
「一木・一牛・一菜」いちぼく・いちぎゅう・いっさい
この地が誇る「一木・一牛・一菜」の生業が力強く動き出す、活気に満ちた季節です。加子母には樹齢千年を超える「加子母の大杉」が静かに佇んでいます。鎌倉幕府を開いた源頼朝が刺した杖が根付いたとされる「手植えの杉」。枝が垂れ下がる様子は、杖を刺した当時のままを表しているそうです。伊豆で頼朝と親交を結んだ僧・文覚上人が霊場を開く際、頼朝が寄せた援助が大樹の始まりでした。途方もない歴史の息づかいが、力強い「陽」のエネルギーを放っています。
一方で、天を仰ぐ大杉とは対照的に、地を這う小さな命に寄せられた「陰」の優しい物語も眠っています。それが盛夏の「なめくじ祭り」です。
由来は、平安時代から鎌倉時代にかけて武士であり僧侶でもあった文覚上人の伝説に遡ります。京都の武士であった遠藤盛遠（後の文覚上人）は、友人の妻・袈裟御前に恋をしました。盛遠は友人に刃を向けますが、彼女は自ら身代わりとなることを決意し、暗闇の中でその命を捧げました。 罪を深く悔いて出家した文覚は全国を行脚し、加子母の地を気に入り、祈りの聖地として威徳寺を開きました。
文覚の死後、墓碑には太刀筋(たちすじ)のような白い模様を持つなめくじが現れるようになりました。墓守が毎日供えた米の研ぎ汁が引き寄せていた日々の営みにすぎないものさえ、村人たちは「袈裟御前の魂だ」と信じ、悲恋の物語として優しく包み込みます。
自然への畏敬(いけい)と小さな命への優しさが交差する記憶が、いつか皆さんの「根っこ」を支える力になると信じています。芒種は種をまく季節。千年を生き抜く木の力強さも、小さく儚い命に寄せる思いも、先人が遺した未来への種です。この土地の鼓動が、心に温かな芽を吹かせることを願っています。
Grains in Ear
Before the arrival of “Grains in Ear,” Kashimo in Nakatsugawa City bursts with vibrant life. This is a season when the regional pride of “One Tree, One Cow, One Vegetable”—represented by Tono cypress, Hida beef, and Kashimo tomatoes—comes to life with vigor.
In Kashimo, the thousand-year-old “Great Cedar of Kashimo” stands quietly. Said to have grown from a cane planted by Minamoto no Yoritomo, this magnificent tree radiates a powerful “Yang” energy. In contrast, there is also a gentle “Yin” story dedicated to small lives: the midsummer “Slug Festival”.
Its origins trace back to Monk Mongaku, a samurai-turned-monk. Originally named Endo Morito, he fell in love with his friend’s wife, Kesa Gozen. When Morito drew his sword against his friend, Kesa Gozen resolutely took her husband’s place, sacrificing her life in the dark. Deeply remorseful, Mongaku took vows and established a sacred site at Itokuji in Kashimo.
At Mongaku’s tomb, slugs with a white pattern resembling a sword cut began to appear. The villagers tenderly embraced them as Kesa Gozen’s soul, passing down this tragic love story.
“Grains in Ear” is the season for sowing seeds. The strength of a thousand-year-old tree and the compassion for fragile lives are both seeds left by predecessors, ready to sprout warm buds in our hearts. This year’s Slug Festival will be held on August 21, 2026.
